This information applies to all CBS majors: Biochemistry; Biology; Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior; Genetics, Cell Biology and Development; Cellular and Organismal Physiology; Microbiology; Neuroscience; and Plant and Microbial Biology
Math
Students typically take a math course in their first semester in CBS. Calculus I is a recommended prerequisite for BIOL 1951/1961: Foundations of Biology Part 1, which is the first biology course in CBS major requirements.
If a student places into Math 1051 Precalculus I, they should consider reviewing the materials and retesting. If a student places into Math 1051 Precalculus I again on their second attempt, they should take Math 1051 Precalculus I.
If a student places into Math 1151 Precalculus II, they should consider reviewing the materials and retesting. If a student places into Math 1151 Precalculus II again on their second attempt, they should take Math 1151 Precalculus II.
If a student places into Math 1241 Calculus and Dynamical Systems in Biology/Math 1271 Calculus I, they should take this course or Math 1571H (if in the University Honors Program) unless they have previous AP/IB/transfer credits.
Additionally, a student may place into two math courses to be taken simultaneously, students will discuss this option with their advisor during their Orientation appointment. This allows students the opportunity to enroll in a higher math course.
Chemistry
Students typically take a chemistry course in their first semester in CBS. Chem 1081/1065, 1061/1065, or the equivalent is a recommended prerequisite for Biol 1951/1961: Foundations of Biology Part 1, which is the first biology course in CBS major requirements.
If a student places into Chem 1015 Introductory Chemistry, they should consider engaging in the learning modules to master the knowledge required with the goal of placing into CHEM 1081/1061/1065. Until the student has shown proficiency in the required topics, they must enroll in CHEM 1015. If a student does not master the chemistry content required for CHEM 1081/1061/1065, the student should remain registered for CHEM 1015.
If a student places into Chem 1081/1061/1065 Chemical Principles I, they should take this course or Chem 1071/1075H (if in the University Honors Program) unless they have previous AP/IB/transfer credits.
