Placement:
Students pursuing Apparel Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Retail & Consumer Studies, or User Experience (UX)
Math
A placement assessment is not required for these College of Design majors. However, all students are encouraged to take the Math Placement Assessment if they are not transferring college-level equivalency credit, especially if they are considering a major change that may require it or plan to enroll in a course with a math prerequisite. Visit U of M programs to view program requirements.
Chemistry
Chemistry is not required for these College of Design majors. However, students planning to pursue a different or additional major or minor that requires chemistry are encouraged to take the Math Placement Assessment, as math placement determines eligibility for chemistry courses. Visit U of M programs to view program requirements.
To allow advisors time to review results and plan for advising, it is recommended that students complete placement exams at least two weeks before their orientation session. For questions about credit transfer (e.g., AP, IB, CIS, PSEO), use TES, Transferology, or contact Admissions.
Students pursuing Architecture
Math
All students must take the Math Placement Exam unless they have already earned or expect to earn college credit equivalent to or higher than MATH 1142: Short Calculus or MATH 1271: Calculus I or its prerequisite course. To allow advisors time to review results and plan for advising, it is recommended that students complete the exam at least two weeks before their orientation session. For questions about credit transfer (e.g., AP, IB, CIS, PSEO), use TES, Transferology, or contact Admissions.
Placement and Recommendations:
- Placement into Math 1031: College Algebra and Probability or Math 1051: Precalculus I: Students should consider reviewing the material and retaking the placement exam.
- Placement into Math 1142: Short Calculus or Math 1151: Precalculus II: Math 1142 is recommended, as it is equivalent in level to Math 1151. Completing Math 1142 meets major and general degree requirements for architecture.
- Placement into Math 1142: Short Calculus or Math 1271: Calculus I: Students should enroll in one of these courses.
All students will have the opportunity to discuss appropriate course enrollment options at Orientation. As part of this advising conversation, students will also review math requirements specific to the two degree options within architecture:
- Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Architecture: Requires completion of MATH 1142: Short Calculus or MATH 1271: Calculus I.
- Bachelor of Design in Architecture (B.D.A.): Requires any college-level math credit.
Chemistry
Chemistry is not required for Architecture. However, students planning to pursue a different or additional major or minor that requires chemistry are encouraged to take the Math Placement Assessment, as math placement determines eligibility for chemistry courses. Students pursuing Product Design
Math
To fulfill degree requirements for Product Design, students must take either STAT 3011: Introduction to Statistical Analysis or MATH 1271/1371: Calculus I.
- Students choosing STAT 3011 do not need to take the Math Placement Exam.
- Students choosing Calculus I must take the Math Placement Exam unless they have already earned or expect to earn college credit equivalent to MATH 1271/1371: Calculus I or its prerequisite course. For questions about credit transfer (e.g., AP, IB, CIS, PSEO), use TES, Transferology, or contact Admissions.
Placement and Recommendations:
- Placement into MATH 1051: Precalculus I: Consider reviewing materials and retesting.
- Placement into MATH 1151: Precalculus II: Consider reviewing materials and retesting.
- Placement into MATH 1271: Calculus I: No need to retest.
Students will have the opportunity to discuss appropriate course enrollment with their academic advisor at Orientation.
