First Year Language Placement

Review the following information and find which describes you. If you are unsure if you need to take a Language Placement Test, reach out to the CLA Student Services Team at [email protected].

For the below, “some language skill” could mean taking a high school or college course, taking an AP or IB course, speaking the language with family or friends, or living for a period of time in an area where the language is spoken.

If you:

  • Have some language skills in Spanish, Somali, Hindi, Urdu, French, or German, you will take the Entrance Proficiency Test (EPT).
  • Have some language skills in a language other than Spanish, Somali, Hindi, Urdu, French, or German you should review the placement information for your language.
  • Speak a language that is not taught at the U of M TC, you should not take a placement test, and need to speak to your advisor at Orientation.
  • Are okay starting in the first semester of a new or previously studied language, you do NOT need to take the placement test.
  • Have taken college-level language coursework for at least four semesters (Intermediate II) and want to continue in language study, you should take the Language Proficiency Exam (LPE).
  • Earned a bilingual seal in high school, take the Language Proficiency Exam (LPE), or reach out to the department offering the language if the LPE is not offered in the language you earned your bilingual seal.
